If you’ve recently decided to buy your very first RV, you’re likely eager to start browsing for your dream model. However, RVs are pretty versatile machines, with some models coming in at the same size as a large car or van, and others as large as a small house. To be sure you’re selecting the right RV for your needs, we strongly advise reading through our helpful guide below!

Your Passengers

When choosing an RV the first thing you’ll need to consider is how many passengers you plan to travel with. The more people you have on board, the more space you’ll need, and the more sleeping areas you’ll need to provide. Large RVs, such as class A motorhomes and fifth wheels, will have an abundance of sleeping spaces and often include handy furniture that can be moved or pulled out to form a comfortable bed.

Your Tow Vehicle

RVs can be split into two simple categories: campers and motorhomes. As the name implies, motorhomes are self-driven—meaning they have their own engines to help them get around. While this can be convenient if you don’t have a strong tow vehicle, these types of RVs often require extra maintenance and quite a bit of fuel. While campers don’t require as much care, if you plan to buy a larger model, you’ll likely need a heavy-duty towing vehicle to haul your rig. If neither of these options fits your needs, a good compromise may be a travel trailer or Class C motorhome. Both of these RVs are medium-sized and are easy to travel in, whether you’re towing or driving your rig.

Features

Your RVs features are another important factor to consider when selecting the right model for your needs. If you’d like a model with a ton of amenities and helpful features, a large rig, such as a class A motorhome, fifth wheel, or toy hauler, is your best bet. If storage space is an important quality for your RV to have, we recommend a toy hauler, as it’s the only RV on the market with attached storage space in the back.

If you’re more focused on convenience than luxury, a truck bed camper or class B motorhome may be the better choice. Class B motorhomes look very similar to vans, and are much easier to navigate through busy streets or into small parking spots than your average RV. Truck bed campers on the other hand are installed directly into the bed of your pickup, making it possible to comfortably camp out in your car no matter where you are.
