Your Guide to Hitching Up a Camper
If you’ve never had to hitch up a camper before, you may be a bit overwhelmed once it’s time to hit the road. Unfortunately, hitching a camper isn’t always an easy process, and will require a little practice before you can really get the hang of things. To help you learn the ins and outs of camper hitching and towing, we’ve written up the helpful instructions below.
Prep Your Camper
Hitching up a camper can take some time, and will require quite a bit of prep from you. Before you can get started, you’ll first need to find a flat area to set everything up. If you try to align your vehicle and camper at an incline, it will be nearly impossible to successfully hitch your rig. Once you’ve found the perfect spot, you’ll want to place wheel chocks behind your camper’s wheels, and insert your ball or hitch mount into your vehicle’s receiver. Afterward, use the switch or crank on your camper’s hitch tongue to lift up your rig just high enough to fit over your vehicle’s hitch.
Align Your Vehicle
Once your camper has been lifted, you’ll need to hop into your tow vehicle and reverse toward your trailer. For a successful hitch, you’ll need to carefully align your camper and vehicle as you reverse, and it may take a couple of tries to get right. Once everything is lined up, slowly reverse until your camper’s coupler is directly over your hitch. You can now park your car to go release your camper’s coupling latch and begin lowering the rig onto the hitch. If aligned correctly, the coupler should slide perfectly onto the hitch mount, and you can go ahead and lock the latch, before completely lowering your camper to the ground.
